Installing the ReliaHome Flex system requires both power and internet. This can be a challenge when installing a Flex system in new construction or other situations where power and internet connections may not be available. This article is intended to offer advice to installers in these situations.
Key understanding: Flex Controller Module relays are sold with circuit-control relays in the open position in order to comply with NFPA 70 (the National Electrical Code) and UL 3141. Relays will remain open and will not allow current to pass until a ReliaHome Flex system is energized and fully configured with Panel Guard. This is a design feature to ensure that the service or equipment ReliaHome Flex is intended to current-limit will not be overloaded before Flex assumes responsibility for current limiting.
One option for new construction is to rough-in wiring with an accessible service loop so that the Flex System can be installed at a later date once power and internet are available. In this scenario an installer must ensure that the electrical service or conductor is not overloaded prior to ReliaHome Flex commissioning. Establishing electrical service and enabling all electrical loads without ReliaHome Flex protection could lead to a situation in which the wiring system is not in compliance with the Code and a hazardous situation may result.
If permanent or temporary power is available but internet is not yet available, ReliaHome Flex can be installed and configured using temporary internet provided by a mobile hotspot. The ReliaHome Flex Hub Module must be connected to the hotspot via ethernet; WiFi connectivity is not an option. Ensure that the hotspot used for this has an ethernet port. Note that while internet is required for initial setup of the Flex system, internet is not required for communication between the Hub Module and Controller Modules; once configured these devices communicate with each other via their own Digimesh network and will continue to communicate regardless of internet or WiFi status. Once Panel Guard is fully configured the temporary internet connection can be removed. Panel Guard will continue operating as configured without internet as long as the system is energized. Installing in this manner maintains code compliance as Panel Guard will ensure that the service and/or conductors are not overloaded. The ReliaHome app cannot be used to communicate with the system without the presence of an internet connection or a local WiFi network, but lack of app data and connectivity does not indicate lack of system functionality. When permanent internet is available the Hub Module should be connected to the router via an ethernet cable. No additional configuration will be required at that time; the system will come online and be accessible via the ReliaHome mobile app.
